Wednesday-
Finished all my homework just in time to pick up GuyverC at the airport. Proceed to stand at terminal like a dumbass and not recognize him. Man standing next to me makes a call and my cellphone rings. Hilarity ensues. Psyco_Haro and DeathByChocolate arrive in Ottawa by car shortly after. After chilling at my place for a bit, we head out to The Works. I try out the Kamikaze burger that Amaterasu No Mikado has deemed as weak. This made for an interesting morning after.
Thursday-
We all pile our stuff into Psyco Haro’s car and start driving towards border. Weather is slightly cloudly in Canada, but we experience three torrential downpours after the crossing of each state line. I forget that american ice tea is unsweetened and unflavored. blech. Reach the Baltimore Convention Center at roughly 4:45 and look to get in line for pre-reg, and find out it already loops around a city block. The line proceeds to move at a decent clip and we’re all signed up by 5:45PM (prereg started at 5). Attempted to get art put into art show, but system crashes for the gentleman right before me. The delay allows the majority of the AX crew to catch up as they had arrived earlier for registration. Many introductions followed. Cass is indeed much, much shorter than I am. At 9PM the Otakon staff give up on the art show computers and tell me to return the following day. The group staying at Cass’ place end the night with take out and ZAFT vs EA 2 Plus.
Friday-
We do an efficient bathroom rotation and set out to set up our table in the Artist Alley. At 10:30AM, staff member tells us that someone had told them that we wanted our table moved and split into two seperate islands. A call is made where Cass explains he wasn’t even in the building and had gone to work. Even with Cass leaving for a few hours to go to work, we managed to get everything set up and ready shortly after the opening at 2pm. Super Robot fans start being drawn toward the awesome aura we emit. That or the fact that Eli and I were singing the Getter Robo theme song. A con goer mention he loves Kotesu Jeeg. We tell him that GuyverC is part of Build Base Fan subs that does Kotesushin Jeeg, and the guy gets down on his knees and start bowing to him. Suffice it to say that all of us got a good chuckle out of it. Psyco Haro managed to catch the Seki Tomokazu panel and said that it was great. After a long day, we tear down and head back to Cass’ place and we all crashed.
Saturday-
Second day of hilarity ensues. Cass tells me that I should increase my products to include bookmarks. I proceed to spend the morning making bookmarks. Lots of deviantart friends come to visit and comment on our crappy spot in the alley. As the day wears on, a pattern starts forming. Everyone asks Eli where the SD sticker of Bumblebee is. The running joke of the weekend turns into “Eli, draw some bumblebee”. Man dressed entirely as a Canadian flag comes over and we bond intantly. Eli is handed a copy of a doujin that he had a small part in. This book also had Ratbat in it, so the subject matter was pretty clear. Table proceeds to die of laughter at Sexmaster Prime. At 10:45PM, Kaji, Eli and I head down to the Gundam panel where I am to be on the panel to draw a custom Gundam for the crowd. A very strange series of requests were given. I sit on the panel and draw, giving out the random smart ass remark. People seem to think I’m funny and can draw well. I note that maybe I should try doing this at bars.
Sunday-
Last day of the con, spent it in the artist alley *surprise*. A crowd of people watch me draw on my laptop and some guy goes “You have skills man!” More people ask Eli for Bumblebee stickers. After closing, Eli had to leave with Kaji and his brothers, and everyone is sad….but then we went to eat sushi and everyone is happy again. We all then eat ice cream from Coldstone’s, drink wine and watched Kung Fu Hustle did we all passed out.
All in all, I had an awesome time at Otakon. Next year I intend to try and fit more stuff into the schedule such as super robot karaoke with Eli, and get more prints for people to see. See you in Baltimore at Otakon 2008!
Otakon ‘07
July 25th, 2007 at 3:47 pm by tanqexeWow, been a while since updating here.
First of all, I want to welcome Eli Mintzer and Matt Bellamy (VR-Eli and GuyverC) as interns into AC.com. Congratulations chums, we shall slave drive you to kingdom come.
Anyway, Otakon was a mix of both good and bad. It was great to hang with all my Canuckian friends, and Eli’s always been a treat to have for company. Unfortunately, I had to work for several hours each day, and stepping out probably cost me quite a few customers who wanted prints. The poor location at the back of the Alley meant that other people had already blown their wads of cash on other things by the time they got to my spot, so that was a real big bummer. Plus, with everyone hoisting tall stands, seeing the monitor where I worked on my paintings was pretty much impossible until you actually venture close to the E island. In addition, I put my minimum bid price too high on the Spider-man painting - it didn’t enter auction because 7 bids are required to go to auction (which IMO is waaaay too many). Meh, a lot of disappointments this year, but all things to learn from. Next year will be much more organized and MUCH more hi-tech. Phil and I plan on making our section of the island at Otakon ‘08 to be the most /m/ friendly, tech-savvy table in the entire Alley.
Anyhoo, can’t really upload any new art that I did at Otakon right now, so for now you’ll have to settle for these:
Stuff I worked on at Otakon, including commissions, old stuff I reworked, and new stuff I want to keep working on:
Random Musings
February 2nd, 2007 at 2:32 pm by PhilHaven’t updated the old journal in a while, here are some thoughts to share…
World of Warcraft expansion:
Having fun playing the Burning Crusade with friends right now. A hair away from reaching the lvl cap. Nothing beats being a roaming death squad when questing. If you’re horde on the Shattered Hand server, watch your back, cause I’m out to get you.
Guilty pleasures:
I dunno why, but I love cooking shows, and lately I’ve been hooked on Curtis Stone’s Take Home Chef while making dinner after class lately. The dude’s accent cracks me up and he has an unhealthy obcession with monkfish.
Windows Vista:
Whoowee, I can get this for free and I still ain’t touching it till SP1. Not only did MS screw up, but every other company that makes products for Windows screwed up by not getting drivers out in time. They delayed the OS by practically a year peeps, why is it still all beta drivers? (*glares at Nvidia*). Get your act together, I want my Media Center features so I can hook my computer up to my XBOX!
Apple iPhone:
So the dust settles after the unveiling, and stuff starts coming out about the iPhone like how Apple isn’t allowing any outside apps and that they didn’t choose Cingular cause it was the best provider but because they were the only ones willing to meet all of Steve Jobs’ egotistical demands, that you can’t access iTunes wirelessly, that there are phones out there that does everything the iPhone does and better that cost a lot less, etc, but everyone still ends off their posts with “but I’m still getting one…”
There’s a word for that. It’s called “Sheep”. Baaaah, beat me harder Stever, I love it when you beat me, Baaaaaaah.
That being said, an 80 gig iPod with a full touch screen for videos would be pretty hot.
