Back home

So I am back in Ottawa now.  I guess that means my trip is over.  I will be filtering through pictures now, trying to find the best ones to print off.  I think I took around 3500+ pictures.   I will probably still add a couple things to this site, like pictures of all the people I met over there and some from the trip home, just to wrap things up.

After that, I’ll move back to my normal site:  www.engsoc.org/~jrobinson/wordpress

It feels good to be home, but I already miss Innsbruck and of course all the people I met.

But back to school today, and time to write my thesis…  The main reason I was there was to do research, and I accomplished most of what I wanted too, so I guess it was a success

Munich

I uploaded my Munich pictures a few days ago, and realized I forgot to make a new post.

The day I got there it was raining and not very nice, but I still went for a walk around the old city. The rain started to let up later on, so that was nice. At night a group from the hostel went out to a couple bars. It was fun and I met people from all over the world. Australia, US, Brazil, Scotland, Germany, …

On the second day a friend from the place where I am living in Innsbruck, Federica, was in Munich, so we hung out and went around to see everything. We saw the Glockenspiel first. Unfortunately the tower around it is being cleaned, so that took away a little bit. Also, it is really quite boring after a few seconds, and it goes for 15 minutes. I didn’t stay for the whole thing. We walked around the old city a little bit to see everything in the sun, and then headed out to the Olympia Park. We went up the tower there and got a great view of the city (and the BMW factory). The buildings in the Olympia park are very cool and are supposed to look like dew on a spider web. After that, we went to the Engisher garden, which is a huge park in the city. It was very nice. For dinner we went to the famously touristy Hofbrauhaus for some BIG beers and really good food.

I started day 3 with a typical Bavarian breakfast of Weisswurst (white sausage), a pretzl and a Weissbier. It was quite good. I then went to the Deutsches Museum, which is a HUGE science and technology museum with lots of interactive displays. If you spend one minute at each exhibit, you would be there for 8 days. I tried to see as much as I could, and I was exhausted by the end. For dinner I went to the Augistinerbrau, which is another beer hall, but one where the locals visit. It was great fun since the local football team won their game that day and the hooligans we singing and dancing. I met a group of Germans there and they took me to the Augustiner Beer garden, which is a huge outdoor patio type place with thousands and thousands of people. It was fantastic.

Before I came home on the last day, I went to the Dachau Concentration camp. It was very strange to see this type of place outside of a movie or documentary, and it really makes everything feel more real. It is a very sad place, but I am glad that I went.

Anyways, Here are the pictures:

Venice is Sinking.

I have finally put up the pictures from Venice.

It was an amazing city to just walk around and explore. It seems that around every corner there is something new to see.

On Day 1 we took the water bus for a little bit and walked back to the hotel. On the way we saw the church outside that was used in Indiana Jones, so that was cool. It was good to get a taste of the streets away from the tourist area. Tom and I also went to check out the Rialto Bridge at night.

Day 2 we went to Piazza San Marco and did a little tour of the church, and surrounding area. We got to see many famous sights like the bridge of Sighs, etc, etc. I also took a water bus trip around the entire island. At night I went back to San Marco to take some night pictures.

On the third day we went to San Giorgio (sp?), a small island across from the square with a church and a bell tower and the beach on Lido, where I swam in the Adriatic sea for a bit. I also went to another island far away called Burano. It was pretty cool. Like Venice, but much smaller and all the houses were painted vibrant colours.

The fourth day I checked out the Jewish Ghetto with Tom and then headed home on the train. It was cool to go through the Brenner Pass.

Here are the pictures: Day 1, Day 2: Page 1, Page2, Day 3: Page 1, Page 2, Day 4

I should get the Munich pictures up soon. Hopefully tomorrow.

Vienna pt. 2

The next stop on the family vacation was Vienna. I am glad I went back in the spring time. It was very nice to see it with leaves on all the trees and flowers in the massive gardens.

In the pictures, there are some from around the city, the boat cruise along the Danube and again at Schloss Shoenbrunn. This time I got to do the hedge maze, and labyrinth. That was pretty cool.

So here are the pictures: Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3.

I didn’t take too many pictures here because I was saving them for Venice. Hopefully I will have them up very soon.

Dachau

I went to the Dachau Concentration camp today.  It is something everyone should do if they are the area.  Not a happy place to be, but well worth the trip.  I will write more later.

Family in Innsbruck

My Mom, step father and brother came to visit last week. We spent some time in Innsbruck, Vienna and Venice.

I don’t have a lot of time at the moment (off to Munich soon).

Here are the pictures which include another trip to the ski jump, some shots from around Innsbruck, Schloss Ambras (a castle with crappy pictures) and a very cool trip to the top of the mountain near Seegrube.

Here are the pictures:

Day 1

Day 2: Page 1, Page 2.

I will start posting pictures from Vienna and Venice when I get back from Munich. I am really starting to fall behind and my posts are really loosing quality. I only have 2 weeks left, and I am a little sad about that.
