{Alternative} Muse - Black Holes and Revelations - Posted on 28 Aug 2006 by Mannis
Music icon

Muse hit it big back in 2004 with their North American debut, as far as I can remember, with their critically hailed 'Absolution'. The CD, which included such songs as 'Time is Running Out' and 'Apocalypse Please' was a pretty decent effort, with some standout tracks but in the end was really hit-or-miss. Will Black Holes be the same, or will it exceed my expectations? Who know, you will if you keep reading, thats who!

World Trade Center - Posted on 15 Aug 2006 by Mannis

The comment most heard when talking about this film, and Paul Greengrass' 'United 93' released earlier this year, is is it too soon for a movie about 9/11. With the effects of that day still being felt world wide, is the topic still too fresh in our minds? After watching Oliver Stone's 'World Trade Center', I can safely say that it is not too soon and Oliver Stone is the perfect man to tackle the material.

Act of War + High Treason - Posted on 04 Jun 2006 by Cabooze
Games [PC] icon

If you love strategy games then this one is for you.  Act of War puts you in complete control of your forces.... This game is balanced extremely well, and unlike every single strategy game I've played, it is not solely an arms race to see who can get superweapons first.  Superweapons are easy to counter if fired at your base while you have power (hint, hint).  Rather, this game focuses heavily on infantry....

{Alternative} Angels and Airwaves - We Don't Need to Whisper - Posted on 28 May 2006 by Mannis

Prompted by a Kevin Howard recommendation, I listened to the first single from the disk, entitled 'The Adventure' somewhat expecting it to be less than stellar, since I wasn't the biggest Blink 182 fan. However, the song was nothing short of incredible, which is much more than I can say for the rest of the disk.

X-Men: The Last Stand....I hope.... - Posted on 27 May 2006 by Mannis
Movies icon

You see, the thing with comic-book movies is there is always a higher level of expectation for them. Usually, this is a good thing with such movies as the previous two X-Men's, the Spiderman movies, and the recent V for Vendetta. However, sometimes hype can turn around and bite you in the ass. That and when you leave a movie in the capable hands of Brett Ratner, you shouldn't be surprised with the results....Oh yeah, if you haven't seen the movie, don't read this. I'm going to ruin EVERYTHING!

Raiden III - Posted on 22 May 2006 by Cabooze
Games [PC] icon
This game is a classic arcade vertical scrolling spaceship shooter with tons of cool powerups, recently re-released for the PC.  I have been looking for this game for years and was sooo happy to have finally found it.  Note that this game is for 1 or 2 players, and is not graphically demanding.  You can safely play this game with a friend  (shared screen) on an older computer, and its hours of fun! [ Trailer (MPEG) ]      [ Teaser (MPEG) ]

Command and Conquer III was released a while ago, but no some trailers are available.  I used to be a HUGE fan of this series, I loved the way they played compared to every other strategy game out there.  The game itself sounds really cool, but I thought that these previews looked terrible.  They didn't even make any sense.... if you want to know what I mean by that ask in a comment and i'll explain.

Indigo Prophecy - Posted on 14 May 2006 by Mannis

I absolutely adore this game. The experience is, if nothing else, unique. Indigo Prophecy plays like no other game I have ever played, and with a story more interesting than most Final Fantasy games, this game was exactly what I needed to re-ignite my video game engine...or flame....

{Folk/Rock/Indie???} Sufjan Stevens - Illinois - Posted on 14 May 2006 by Mannis

Wow....just wow....this CD takes a good three or four listen-throughs for it to really sink in how epic Illinois really is. This CD is part of Sufjan Stevens' ambitious 50 States collection, which so far includes Illinois and Michigan, from which I have heard only a few songs from. Sufjan Stevens' lyrical prowess, and his ability to combine many different instruments, genres, and styles all come together to tell the story of the state of Illinois with such power and class that it becomes clear that you are listening to a masterwork.. This CD shows just how deep and emotional music can be.

{Alternative} Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - Posted on 14 May 2006 by Mannis
Music icon

Anyone who has been talking to me about music recently has no doubt noticed my obsession with this British group. What it is that makes the Arctic Monkeys so great is not only is their sound completely unique, but they don't conform to a certain idea of what music is. Their lyrics are intelligent, the beat catchy, and all this from a band who are all still in their teens.

I am going to review this game on the PC platform, but this game is also available on every other platform, from PlayStation to handheld.  I was definetly skeptical when I saw this title listed on the torrents.  I checked IGN and glanced at some of the screenshots and decided I'd give it a shot. Halo 3 Trailer {E3 2K6} - Posted on 13 May 2006 by Cabooze
Games [Xbox] icon
[ WMP - Large ]

[ Quicktime - Small ]

Just had to see it, so i downloaded it overnight.... Must say it wasn't the most exciting trailer I've ever seen, but meh, its Halo 3, so its kool.

Word is this is the final installment in the halo trilogy, which i think is cool... MS studios/bungie isn't like EA squeezing the life out of their flagship titles with millions of sequels... Oh, and if you didn't know already, this is for the X360.

"We won't ruin the content of our short presentation by describing it frame by frame, but we will note that everything you're seeing here is being rendered in real-time on the Xbox 360, using the current version of our Halo 3 game engine. The HDR lighting, self-shadowing, GPU-run particle system and many other effects should make it intact (and more) to our final game."

So after this, we can hope for PC releases!

Sorry I took so long to review this, I uninstalled it nearly a month ago.  When I first fired up this game I was a little skeptical, as I'd never played an RPG before.  So what made me want to try it?  Mostly the screenshots I saw.  And the fact I was feeling a little like a lenghty RPG.  Well... to summarize my entire review, playing this game was a GREAT choice! The Inside Man - Posted on 28 Mar 2006 by Mannis

I wasn't really sure what to expect when I went to see The Inside Man. On one hand, it looked to be a very smart, intelligent heist film. But on the other hand, I was worried that it was going to be one of those 'all the good parts are in the trailer' type of movies. From the minute the opening credits began, I knew that all my worrying was for not cause what I got was one of the best heist movies I have seen in a very long time. I'm pretty much a slut for 24 now. There was a downtime where I missed the entire 4th season, but now I'm back and on the edge of my seat once again. So I figured, games based on movies are good (not really) so games based on TV shows should be good as well (makes sense).

V for Vendetta - Posted on 19 Mar 2006 by Mannis
Movies icon

Expectations were high going in to V for Vendetta. It has been hyped to shit, and being a fan of the graphic novel of which it is based, I was getting ready for the Wachowski's (of Matrix fame) script to lose it's political backdrop and become an all-out action extravaganza. However, by the time the film was over, what I got had shades of Wachowski, but that was it. This movie is so stylish, so intelligent, incredibly written and acted and with a story that lines up with events taking place at this point, is very relevant in today's society, without being overly preachy.....which is a good thing.

Chris' Oscar Preview and Predictions - Posted on 05 Mar 2006 by Mannis

Its that time of year again, where the stars come out in all their glory for the academy awards. This year, the 78th awards, features a plethora of small, independant movies in contention for most of the major awards. Their is no Lord of the Rings juggernaut, or a Titanic, all of the movies nominated for best picture this year earned less than $100 million at the box-office, so this year will probably be the least watched in recent years. The main categories I will cover are the Acting awards, Picture, Director, Screenplay, Documentary and Animated Features. I will add my picks if I did the nominating, and who should win and who will probably win. So without further ado, let us begin.

Chris' 'Why did I waste my time with this crap' choice of the week: SAW II - Posted on 14 Feb 2006 by Mannis

Okay, so where to begin with this one. I had somewhat high hopes going into this, since I have only recently watched the first film which was a great movie that managed to combine the horror elements of the story with interesting characters, very intriguing premise and an overall creepy feel to it. However, Saw II on the other hand manages to take everything that the first movie did so well and proceeds to vomit on it. [Read more]

I'll start posting mine when I have free time that doesn't need to be spend on coding!

So here we are, the top five of last year. Doing 10 was difficult as their were many that missed the cut, but the top five are movies that I liked both from an audience point of view as well as a film makers point of you. And they are all vastly different types of movies as well, so without further ado,

Rating System? - Posted on 31 Jan 2006 by Kevin
Site News icon
Well guys I think this site could be a whole bunch of fun. But what I think we should do is come up with a rating system that we should all use. You don't see Ebert and Roeper using two different systems ( PS the two thumbs system really isn't that great) Let me know what you think about the universal system. ( We could always use different systems for different media types)

Plus Chris try not to trash everyones reviews, we all know that your tastes are far suprior to everyone elses, but keep it to constructive criticisms. not 10 year old girl remarks as "Mines better than yours".

The top 10 of 2005 are quite varied, and this is the first year that I can think of where there are more than one documentary present. Numbers 6-10 are from a wide range of genres, and featuring a wide range of talents....

City and Colour - Sometimes

Okay, so I listened to this becuase of Kevin's constant nagging and needless to say, if you know my taste in music, I wasn't blown away. However, even though it is just Emo crying music, it isn't completely terrible. Just like 80% terrible.

Alright so this is my first review, and I’m so glad I got to review this before Mannis, or whoever else wanted to get there grubby little paws on it.

...So you’ve probably heard the new single “Save your Scissors” on the radio. That song is just the beginning of City and Colour and Dallas Green’s Brilliance.

Veronica Mars - Posted on 30 Jan 2006 by Mannis

I recently borrowed the first season of Veronica Mars from my sister after catching it last year when it aired on CTV and missed nearly half the episodes. Now, after watching all 22 episodes in about 5 days I have come to the conclusion that Veronica Mars is the most awesome show on television right now.

Shadow of the Colossus - Posted on 30 Jan 2006 by Joel

"Some mountains are scaled others are slain"

After playing shadow, I've come to the realization that this is an understatement. The game starts off with a young man by the name of "wanderer", carrying the body of a woman to an altar. He makes a deal with the gods, if he can rid the land of the monstrous beasts, the girls' life will be restored. However, this is no small task....

Favorites of 2005: Honorable Mentions - Posted on 30 Jan 2006 by Mannis
Movies icon

2005 was a strange year in film, with a lot of movies considered to be great but an equal number of movies that are widely considered to be garbage. Personally, I thought 2005 was a very strong year with plenty of career making performances, outstanding movies from people I never thought could make one and big blockbusters actually being quite good. It was difficult picking only 10, so I have 3 honorable mentions that if released any other year could possibly have cracked the top 10. There are still plenty I have yet to see, so odds are this isn't final.

Underworld: Evolution - Posted on 30 Jan 2006 by Mannis

Underworld: Evolution

The thing that made the first Underworld movie awesome was that is was a cool movie. It had a whole dark gothic appeal to it and that made the movie stand out from other similar monster movies. But the thing that seperates the original from this sequel is the movie just isn't cool anymore.

     Final Grade: 87%

Imagine this; You are doing homework and you can't concentrate because it is way too quiet so you decide to find some music to play to set your mind at ease. You want something mellow, that is not too hard but you don't want any of that pussy crap that they play on the radio. Can't think of anything? Well guess what, I have!

NHL 06 - Xbox

Final Grade: 91%

So the NHL is off for a whole year and you are thinking to yourself, how the HELL is EA going to pull off a videogame when they don't even know what the heck is going on. Well guess what, they did it! All the new rules, the old rules, the big trades, the big names BUT there is a downfall to all of this happiness that surrounds EA's new game NHL 06. Where the F*%$ are the new rookies??

It was only a matter of time until EA brought the right thumbstick into use with batting. If you have ever played Tiger Woods golf or even Knockout Kings, you know that the right thumbstick is used for almost every aspect of the games....
