The mail server was down due to hardware issues from Oct 10 at approximately 6:30 PM to Oct 13 at 3:46 PM. E-mails sent to EngSoc addresses during that window will be delayed and delivered when the sender's mail server retries (usually within 24 hours). We apologize for any inconvenience and are working to replace the unreliable hardware.

You can now reset your EngSoc account password automatically online. You will need access to your secondary e-mail address (usually Carleton Connect) to complete the process.

Due to weather conditions, on August 23 between approximately 1:30 PM and 3 PM, there was a building-wide power outage which also affected the EngSoc server room. As a side effect, network connectivity was lost until the following day (August 24) at 1 PM. All services should now be operational. Measures have been taken to avoid connectivity downtime following future power outages.

We experienced a network connectivity outage from the morning of Friday July 23 to Monday July 26 at approximately 7:30 AM. During this time, all EngSoc services (web, mail, SSH, DNS) were unavailable both from campus and from hosts on the Internet. We expect all e-mails sent to/from EngSoc servers during the outage to be retried and delivered within the next 24-48 hours.

Over the Christmas holidays, Mackenzie's third floor switch had problems, and as a result, EngSoc was unavailable to access until today. Mail is queued and will be delivered in due time.

Carleton Network Upgrade (CNU) is currently installing Cat 5e in 3rd Block MacKenzie Building, and as a result, some of EngSoc services are intermittently unavailable (webpages loading slowly, not being able to check mail, etc.) However, this is not limited to EngSoc's server, as the campus' main servers are also lagging behind. Updates will be posted as soon as news becomes available.

If you are running PHP which assumes that it is able to send mail from brewmaster to the outside world, it will find it is now unable to, in order to prevent abuse by spammers. Mail from brewmaster to any mail address hosted on stout will work though.

Wireless in 3rd block Mackenzie building is back up and running for the 2006-2007 year after a myriad of last-minute issues were uncovered.

The key which signs all user keys (and allowes you to be authenticated) expired at the end of August and had to be regenerated. As such, every wireless user must download and install a new certificate from https://wireless.engsoc.org/ in order to access the wireless network.

As well, always keep in mind that usage of the wireless network is subject to the EngSoc code of conduct, and the CCS Golden network rules.

Our wireless authentication server, pint.engsoc.org, appears to have died a hardware death on Thursday night. It will be reincarnated on another machine on Monday. Hopefully the wireless will be back up on Monday as well. Sorry for any inconvenience.

There was an issue with stout locking up, but now it is fixed.
CCS also had some hardware issues, but that's now resolved.
Wireless is in the process of getting back up.

The service interruption today at around 2:00PM was due to a problem on CCS's side. Everything is working normally now as of 8:30PM, with the exception of wireless. Wireless access will be back up tomorrow.

After experience a bogged down network for the last few days, we suspected our switch of being faulty, and Kyle dragged in his 24-port Cisco from home. After switching over to this working switch did not correct the problem, alternate sources for the interference were suspected. We found a couple perl scripts running on the webserver committing a DOS attack against various IP addresses, and port scanning. It appeared that these were able to run by an exploit in some users CGI code. This means we've disabled CGI in public_html until we can audit as much as possible of it. If you need CGI for some web application you are running in your public_html, please email ett and they will add the option for your specific directory. The /tmp filesystem on brewmaster has also been mounted noexec to prevent the webserver from running someones backdoor from it. Normalcy was restored around midnight on the 17th.

The power supply for our core switch died sometime after 5pm yesterday and was "replaced" last night just after midnight. That was a long one, but we don't actually have replacement parts for that.

We're having trouble with our mail server. It keeps locking up for no apparent reason. This would not be a problem if UPS hadn't lost the disk we're waiting for. If anyone has a spare 160gb drive laying around, e-mail us. Otherwise, we're forced to wait for another one to be shipped priority (via UPS!).

Some may have noticed that the new fileserver still hasn't gone live. We're waiting on a replacement disk from Maxtor and UPS can't seem to find the package. This has held things up for weeks, but we're hopeful this week will be the one.

Stout became unresponsive today. It required a hard reboot, and when it came back up one of the drives in the RAID array was dead. So, we need to replace it and will announce down-time before that happens.

Stout is continuing to be unhappy about the missing disk. A replacement was purchased today and will go in as soon as someone has time. This 3ware RAID card is hardly fault tolerant.

Apparently the power in our office went out. It went out for longer than 30 minutes so our UPS shut all the machines off. Stout wasn't happy about that and dropped a hard disk. We'll get a replacement soon and put it in.
