October 20, 2010

We had a small period of downtime between approximately 1 PM and 2:45 PM today due to power issues. All services should be restored at this time.

October 13, 2010

The mail server was down due to hardware issues from Oct 10 at approximately 6:30 PM to Oct 13 at 3:46 PM. E-mails sent to EngSoc addresses during that window will be delayed and delivered when the sender's mail server retries (usually within 24 hours). We apologize for any inconvenience and are working to replace the unreliable hardware.

September 28, 2010

You can now reset your EngSoc account password automatically online. You will need access to your secondary e-mail address (usually Carleton Connect) to complete the process.

https://hops.engsoc.org/reset/

Please contact the EngSoc Technical Team (ett@engsoc.org) with any issues.

August 24, 2010

Due to weather conditions, on August 23 between approximately 1:30 PM and 3 PM, there was a building-wide power outage which also affected the EngSoc server room. As a side effect, network connectivity was lost until the following day (August 24) at 1 PM. All services should now be operational. Measures have been taken to avoid connectivity downtime following future power outages.

July 26, 2010

We experienced a network connectivity outage from the morning of Friday July 23 to Monday July 26 at approximately 7:30 AM. During this time, all EngSoc services (web, mail, SSH, DNS) were unavailable both from campus and from hosts on the Internet. For more information on the outage, see the CCS Outage Archive: Network Connectivity - NB, RO, UC, AA, HP, SC, ME, SP, AC Buildings.

We expect all e-mails sent to/from EngSoc servers during the outage to be retried and delivered within the next 24-48 hours.

October 3, 2006

Carleton Network Upgrade (CNU) is currently installing Cat 5e in 3rd Block MacKenzie Building, and as a result, some of EngSoc services are intermittently unavailable (webpages loading slowly, not being able to check mail, etc.) However, this is not limited to EngSoc's server, as the campus' main servers are also lagging behind. Updates will be posted as soon as news becomes available.

September 24, 2006

If you are running PHP which assumes that it is able to send mail from brewmaster to the outside world, it will find it is now unable to, in order to prevent abuse by spammers. Mail from brewmaster to any mail address hosted on stout will work though.

September 12, 2006

Wireless in 3rd block Mackenzie building is back up and running for the 2006-2007 year after a myriad of last-minute issues were uncovered.

The key which signs all user keys (and allowes you to be authenticated) expired at the end of August and had to be regenerated. As such, every wireless user must download and install a new certificate from https://wireless.engsoc.org/ in order to access the wireless network.

As well, always keep in mind that usage of the wireless network is subject to the EngSoc code of conduct, and the CCS Golden network rules.

Have a good year.

September 11, 2006

Wireless certification and wireless is currently down.

March 14, 2006

brewmaster powered back on. Everything seems ok.

March 13, 2006

February 1, 2006

Issues with stout are now back to normal.

January 25, 2006

Our certificate server, http://wireless.engsoc.org, is back up and running. If you can't connect wirelessly, please re-download a new certificate.

November 22, 2005

The service interruption today at around 2:00PM was due to a problem on CCS's side. Everything is working normally now as of 8:30PM, with the exception of wireless. Wireless access will be back up tomorrow.

November 17, 2005

After experience a bogged down network for the last few days, we suspected our switch of being faulty, and Kyle dragged in his 24-port Cisco from home. After switching over to this working switch did not correct the problem, alternate sources for the interference were suspected. We found a couple perl scripts running on the webserver committing a DOS attack against various IP addresses, and port scanning. It appeared that these were able to run by an exploit in some users CGI code. This means we've disabled CGI in public_html until we can audit as much as possible of it. If you need CGI for some web application you are running in your public_html, please email ett and they will add the option for your specific directory. The /tmp filesystem on brewmaster has also been mounted noexec to prevent the webserver from running someones backdoor from it. Normalcy was restored around midnight on the 17th.

October 18, 2005

Kyle sucks at keeping news.php up to date. Add in some missing news entry from the past year.

March 04, 2005

September 18, 2004

We're currently (again) having some issues with the mailserver, stout. Thanks in advance for your patience, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Update: After spending 11 hours trying to revive the disk array, Kyle and Pat backed up /var/mail to hops and decided to run the array in degraded mode for the time being.

September 4, 2004

Everything should be back to normal now. Thanks for your patience. It is possible that some new mail was temporarily lost, apologies if that occured to anyone.

September 3, 2004

Service interruption! Sorry, due to some issues with the mailserver, you may not be able to access your mail over the next day. Don't worry, it will all be queued and delivered when service is restored. Thanks for your patience.

April 30, 2004

The power supply for our core switch died sometime after 5pm yesterday and was "replaced" last night just after midnight. That was a long one, but we don't actually have replacement parts for that.

February 18, 2004

Lager was rebooted to boot a new kernel because of a security update. All other servers will be rebooted in the near future.

January 10, 2004

Lager is now running Debian. If you notice any software missing, let ett know.

Apr 23, 2003

PAL is closed for the summer. The idea is to improve the image over the summer and reopen in September. If you think yanking on the keyboards or mice will make PAL work, you're wrong.

Apr 4, 2003

There was a network outage affecting all hosts on campus last night. CCS fixed the problem early this morning and problems like that will be detected earlier in the future. Some incoming mail may be delayed.

Mar 15, 2003

Kolsch, our interim mailserver, died just now. Someone's on the way over to give him a kick.

Mar 14, 2003

The drive arrived from Maxtor finally. The new fileserver, hops, seems to be working fine. Next step is moving user directories to the new machine.

Mar 5, 2003

We're having trouble with our mail server. It keeps locking up for no apparent reason. This would not be a problem if UPS hadn't lost the disk we're waiting for. If anyone has a spare 160gb drive laying around, e-mail us. Otherwise, we're forced to wait for another one to be shipped priority (via UPS!).

Mar 2, 2003

Some may have noticed that the new fileserver still hasn't gone live. We're waiting on a replacement disk from Maxtor and UPS can't seem to find the package. This has held things up for weeks, but we're hopeful this week will be the one.

Jan 20, 2003

The Dean's office and CSES helped fund a trip for 4 of our volunteers to represent carleton engineering at the Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference (CUTC.ca) in Toronto.

Jan 13, 2003

Our new fileserver from pogolinux arrived today. It's a very nice machine. Thanks to the funding by CUESEF.

Dec 18, 2002

Most of the electrical outlets in our office don't seem to be working. The UPS circuit seems okay though. Some machines were off for a while today as a result. We don't know what happened.

Dec 14, 2002

Brewmaster stopped responding to HTTP and DNS sometime this morning. It was rebooted at approximately 13:30 and things are back to normal.

Nov 29, 2002

Stout became unresponsive today. It required a hard reboot, and when it came back up one of the drives in the RAID array was dead. So, we need to replace it and will announce down-time before that happens.

Oct 17, 2002

There was a power outage. Nobody was around so Lager and Brewmaster didn't come back up.

March 20, 2002

There'll be a power outage tomorrow from 10pm til 2am. The machines will go down as late as possible and come back up as soon as someone comes in on Friday morning to turn them on.

March 19, 2002

We're still waiting for our WiFi equipment. It'll be nice when it comes in.

March 6, 2002

March 5, 2002

We've been having some troubles with Stout lately and he's currently rebuilding his RAID array. Stout will be back online this evening, hopefully for good.

March 4, 2002

Stout is continuing to be unhappy about the missing disk. A replacement was purchased today and will go in as soon as someone has time. This 3ware RAID card is hardly fault tolerant.

March 3, 2002

Apparently the power in our office went out. It went out for longer than 30 minutes so our UPS shut all the machines off. Stout wasn't happy about that and dropped a hard disk. We'll get a replacement soon and put it in.
