Board of Governors Election Rules

The following is a simple, concise list of all rules affecting the EngSoc BOG elections. Failure to abide by these rules may result in any of the following penalties: a) a public warning b) banished from the election c) being recommended to the current BOG for account suspension.

These rules are made simple on purpose: EngSoc has never been and shouldn't be an organization restrained by rules and regulations. The people who are best suited to being on BOG are people who know how to interpret these rules.

Nominating rules:

  1. Any EngSoc user may nominate up to four people.
  2. To accept your own nomination, you must nominate yourself before nominations are over.
  3. All nominations are electronic: people nominating should look type "nominate" from lager.
  4. To be on the final ballot, you need to collect 10 nominations.
  5. Nominations will take place from 8pm, Monday, March 11 to 11:59 Friday, March 15th at 11:59pm.
  6. All those officially nominated by the end of the nomination period will be announced by Saturday, March 15th at noon.
Voting rules:
  1. Only current, valid EngSoc account owners may vote.
  2. Voters can cast their ballot only once.
  3. Voting will take place from 12:01am, Monday, March 18 to 11:59pm Friday, March 22.
  4. All voters can vote for up to four candidates, all competing for the same position of member of the Board of Governors.
  5. Voting is done electronically. To vote, type "vote" from lager machine.
Campaigning rules:
  1. All candidates must have a current, active EngSoc account and be a member of the CSES.
  2. Campaigning must follow the EngSoc user agreement.
  3. No candidate may insult, put down or offend another candidate. Campaigning should be clean.
  4. All campaigning should reflect some sort of platform or opinion. This is not a popularity contest.
  5. No candidate should exceed personal expenditures of more than $10 for the entire campaign. This includes photocopying, laser printing, etc. The CEO will judge the cost of all expenditures. Remember: speech is pretty much free. So is posting on UseNet.
  6. No candidate may abuse 'net priveledges. E Mail campaigning must be done individually (eg. mailing 20 of your friends in one email is _NOT_ allowed). Spamming newsgroups is strictly forbidden. You may _NOT_ post to more than one newsgroup at a time.
  7. The following are places where campaigning may not take place:
    • the carleton.societies.cses.engsoc.announce newsgroup
    • any on or off campus mailing list
    • any newsgroup that is not in the carleton.* domain
    • any medium that is controlled only by system administrators of EngSoc (eg. the login prompt, issue.net, sysnews)
    • in or within 10ft of the door of the EngSoc office
  8. All candidates must follow the "spirit" of EngSoc: dedication, professionalism, respect for others, appreciation for the electronic medium and legality.
  9. The current EngSoc BOG may not officially support any candidate(s).
The CEO acknowledges that he is human, and as such, there may be omissions in these rules. The outgoing BOG has acknowledged the CEO to be a sane individual understanding the spirit and attitude of EngSoc; it is this that he is basing his attitude on.

Technical problems may affect times scheduled.

It may be necessary due to unthought of circumstances to change the details of the rules. All discussion to this effect will be made public.

There is only one circumstance under which there will be a re-election: in the case of a tie.

Any complaints about candidates may be mailed to adevries@engsoc.carleton.ca

All feedback sent to bog(at)engsoc.org is welcome.
